Calgary election 2021: Ward 4 results

Incumbent Councillor Sean Chu hopes to once again represent ward that envelops Calgary’s Nose Hill Park.

The only change to the ward boundary in 2021 removes part of the Horizon neighbourhood.

Here’s a quick look at the four candidates running for council in Ward 4, in alphabetical order.

Sean Chu

A former officer with the Calgary Police Service and immigrant from Taiwan, Chu has served on city council for two terms.

Chu says he will continue his work on pedestrian safety in the ward, installing the Green Line and prudent use of tax dollars.

Daniel James (DJ) Kelly

DJ Kelly’s CV is a long one: he’s worked with the city on the open data catalogue, the city’s digital strategy, was the strategy lead on the corporate cultural transformation project and led the corporate marketing team.

He is a certified project management professional whose experience also includes with the U of C and the United Way. He’s volunteered with Calgary Economic Development, the Calgary Airport Authority, the Winston Heights-Mountview community association, and is the chair and co-founder of PechaKucha Calgary.

Angela McIntyre

McIntyre has 20 years experience in the city’s arts and non-profits sector, including Wordfest and the Confederation Park 55+ activity centre. She has also volunteered with Pride, the Windsor Park Community Association, AARCS, and the north country fair, among others.

McIntyre’s website lists the Green Line, climate resilience, supporting local business and liveability as issues she hopes to address as councillor.

Shane Roberts

A former university instructor, air force member and food courier, Roberts is also a recording artist and musician who has lived in many different cities.

Roberts’ social media posts appear to show his disapproval of public health measures like vaccines and masking during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, 27 people are running for mayor and there are 100 candidates for city council. Eighteen people are running to become Calgary Catholic School Board trustees, while 38 people are running to become Calgary Board of Education trustees.
