EDMONTON- The pilot of a small aircraft was found dead after a plane crash in northern Alberta Friday afternoon.
Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to a report of a downed aircraft south of Fort McMurray around 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The plane was found upside down in a body of water in a “remote location,” according to RCMP.
The Department of National Defence Search and Rescue from Cold Lake attended and recovered the pilot’s body. The pilot was the only person in the downed plane, RCMP said.
Records show the plane crashed about 45 minutes after taking off from the Fort McMurray airport. Officers say it was scheduled for a “short flight south.”
The cause of the crash has not been released. It is still under investigation by Transport Canada and the Alberta Transportation Safety Board.
The victim’s identity is not being released out of respect for the family.
