Liberal incumbent Mark Gerretsen is projected to win his third term as Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands.
Gerretsen secured victory in the Kingston riding with more than 40 per cent of the vote and 56 per cent of polls reporting by 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.
He has held the riding since 2015 — in an area that has been red since 1988. He previously served as Kingston’s mayor from 2010-2014.
NDP candidate Vic Sahai is projected as the runner up, bringing in 28 per cent of the vote so far.
The Ontario riding of Kingston and the Islands has been represented in the House of Commons since 1968.
The riding shares an international maritime border with the American state of New York. It covers part of the City of Kingston and the sparsely populated Frontenac Islands in the St. Lawrence River.
Notable past and present residents of the riding include Dan Aykroyd, Bryan Adams, Gord Downie and John A. Macdonald.
In 2019, several first-time federal candidates ran against Gerretsen — local businessman Ruslan Yakoviychuk representing the Conservatives, Queen’s professor Barrington Walker ran as the NDP candidate and local academic Candice Christmas represented the Green Party.
