Gia Allemand’s death only latest tragedy involving a former reality show star

TORONTO — Best known for being a part of The Bachelor and Bachelor Pad, model-actress Gia Allemand died Aug. 14 — two days after she reportedly hanged herself. She was 29.

Allemand is not the first former reality show star to attempt or commit suicide. Here’s a look at some other high-profile cases:

– Country singer Mindy McCready was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in February 2013 after appearing on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

– Russell Armstrong, who appeared on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with then-wife Taylor Armstrong, committed suicide on Aug. 15, 2011 by hanging himself from a wooden beam in his bedroom with an extension cord.

American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino attempted suicide in 2010 with an overdose of pills after getting dumped by her married boyfriend Antwaun Cook. The emotional aftermath was captured on camera for Barrino’s own reality show.

The Bachelorette contestant Julien Hug, who competed for the affection of Jillian Harris, shot himself in the head in 2010 in a remote part of the San Bernardino National Forest in California.

– Joseph Cerniglia jumped to his death from New York’s George Washington Bridge in September 2009, two years after appearing on Kitchen Nightmares. In an eerie coincidence, host Gordon Ramsay had told Cerniglia on the show: “Your business is about to f**king swim down the Hudson.”

– Former Megan Wants a Millionaire contestant Ryan Jenkins committed suicide in August 2009 in a motel room in Hope, B.C. after killing his wife Jasmine Fiore and fleeing the U.S.

– Failed American Idol contestant Paula Goodspeed committed suicide by overdosing on drugs in front of Idol judge Paula Abdul’s house in November 2008.

– Rachel Brown, a contestant on Hell’s Kitchen, shot herself in May 2007 inside her home.

– Former child star Danny Bonaduce attempted suicide in 2005, while filming his reality show Breaking Bonaduce, after his wife asked for a divorce. He was arrested and held on a 24-hour psychiatric hold.
