Parks said officers attempted to deescalate the situation but shots were fired.

Two officers were also taken to hospital for evaluation, Parks added.

Shortly after, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate and is now investigating.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 416-808-2222 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477.
