Tour bus drives off road in southern France, leaving 2 dead, many injured

PARIS – A tour bus drove off of a coastal highway overnight in southern France, leaving two people dead and several injured.

Local official Marie-Paule Bardeche said Sunday that 44 people were on the bus when it went off the road in the Mediterranean town of Fitou, not far from the Spanish border. Nearly everyone sustained an injury, she said, and two people are still in serious condition. One of the dead was a French man, the other a Spanish woman.

A relative of one of the passengers expressed surprise on French television that anyone survived, and images showed a crumpled bus with its windshield peeled down, lying on its side in the grass below the road.

Bardeche wouldn’t speculate on what caused the crash, saying an investigation had just begun.
