One of two people charged with first-degree murder in the death of a Calgary officer will remain in police custody pending his trial.
Sgt. Andrew Harnett, 37, was killed during a traffic stop in northeast Calgary on New Year’s Eve when he pulled over a vehicle because the headlights were out.
Harnett was hit and dragged by the vehicle and later died in hospital.

It’s alleged the vehicle was being driven by a 17-year-old — who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) — while 19-year-old Amir Abdulrahman sat in the passenger seat.
On Thursday, youth court judge Steve Lipton denied bail for the teenager but his lawyer made a responsible adult application.
Under the YCJA, a youth can request to be placed in the care of a responsible adult rather than be detained in police custody.
On Monday morning, Lipton denied the responsible adult application.
Abdulrahman’s bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 4.
