In a statement Wednesday, police said they responded to the city’s core around 2:30 p.m. after receiving calls from the public about a man who was seen striking signs and structures with a golf club.

It’s alleged the man had damaged the patio of 225 Dundas St., also known as Che RestoBar, before fleeing on foot.

Foot patrol officers located the suspect on nearby King Street and placed him into custody, police said.

“I hope the person who did it is actually receiving some help right now, help that he definitely needs,” said Martin Rivas, the owner of Restobar.

Rivas had a sympathetic tone when discussing the incident on London Live with Mike Stubbs. He adds that while he’ll have to dole out some cash to repair the damaged patio, the city does have a program to help cover the costs.

As for becoming a victim of vandalism, Rivas says he’s heard of other restaurants experiencing something similar.

“It’s happening in different neighbourhoods around the city, so I don’t think it’s something that is just localized to the downtown,” Rivas said.

The accused is set to appear in court on March 2 for the charge.

Members of the public with information about the incident are asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
