Winnipeg police say they were kept busy with a string of violent calls over the weekend.
At a press conference Monday police spokesperson Const. Jay Murray gave details on nine separate stabbings officers were called to across the city starting Friday afternoon.
The first call came in just after 3:30 p.m. Friday when a 60-year-old man was taken to hospital in stable condition after being stabbed at an apartment in the 300 block of Hargrave Street.
Police say the stabbing happened after a man set out looking for retaliation for a broken window, and came upon an unsuspecting group of people.
They say he threatened the group before stabbing the man.
Nicholas Leal Matos, 19 is facing a number of charges.
Police then responded to a stabbing at a home in the Richmond West neighbourhood around 12:24 a.m. Saturday.
Police say a 17-year-old male was rushed to hospital in unstable condition after he was stabbed several times after police say he tried to rob a 14-year-old acquaintance.
The 14-year-old is charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, while the 17-year-old who was stabbed is facing two counts of robbery charges.
Officers were then called to a bar in the 1600 block of Main Street where a 32-year-old man was stabbed around 1:51 a.m. Sunday.
The man, who police say was stabbed while walking to the bar, was taken to hospital in stable condition. Police are continuing to investigate.
Then, roughly 10 minutes later police were called to the reports of a shooting at another bar in the 1100 block of Arlington Street. In that case police say shots were fired, but no one was hit.
A man who was stabbed during the dispute arrived at hospital a short time later. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
Police were called to their next stabbing several hours later, when a 53-year-old man was taken to hospital in stable condition after being stabbed during a robbery around 1:30 p.m. Sunday at a hotel in the 700 block of Main Street.
A 48-year-old woman is charged in connection with that stabbing.
Police were called back to a suite in a different hotel in the 700 block of Main Street just before 3 p.m. Sunday where a 46-year-old man was rushed to hospital in unstable condition.
In that case police say the man was stabbed over allegations of stolen drugs.
A 39-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman are facing charges.
Officers were then called to a home in the first 100 block of St. George Road after a 34-year-old man was stabbed during a home invasion over illicit drugs around 9:17 p.m. Sunday.
The man, who police say was part of a group of people involved in the home invasion showed up at a nearby hospital with what police say are serious injuries.
The man and a 33-year old man are now facing a number of charges connected with the home invasion. Police say the resident, a 43-year-old man, is facing a number of drug and trafficking charges.
The violence continued into Monday morning, said Murray.
Police were called to yet another stabbing near Selkirk Avenue and Charles Street around 1:35 a.m. Monday.
A 40-year-old man found severely injured was rushed to hospital in unstable condition. Police say the man was stabbed after being “swarmed” by a group of people. Police continue to investigate.
Then police were called to another stabbing — the ninth since Friday afternoon — just after 5 a.m. Monday morning.
A 47-year-old woman was rushed to hospital in unstable condition after she was found suffering from stab wounds at a home in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue.
Police say the woman was stabbed during an argument with another woman. Police say they’ve got a suspect in custody in connection with the stabbing, and the investigation continues.
