Missing teen’s body found near Smoky Lake

EDMONTON- RCMP say a 16-year-old Smoky Lake girl who was reported missing Friday night has been found dead.

With the assistance of the RCMP Air Services Helicopter, the girl’s overturned truck was located around 11:00 Saturday morning. Her body was found inside the truck, RCMP said Saturday afternoon.

Officers say the pickup left the road and crashed into White Earth Creek, which is located about eight kilometres east of Smoky Lake.

The teen’s parents reported the girl missing to RCMP on Friday night, after she failed to return home when she was expected. Saturday morning, RCMP requested the help of the helicopter, after they were unable to locate the girl Friday night.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but RCMP say it is not believed to be suspicious. Officers say alcohol was not a factor, but fatigue may have been.

Smoky Lake is located about 120 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
