EDMONTON- Two of Edmonton’s busiest outdoor shopping districts are now home to new bike corrals.
Old Strathcona and the 124th Street shopping district have received bike corrals as part of the city’s on-street bike parking program.
The city piloted on-street bike corrals in Old Strathcona in 2012. City officials say because of the success of the project, the city is expanding it to five Edmonton locations.
“Results from our survey in 2012 show that 88 per cent of people surveyed support on-street bike parking,” said Councillor Ben Henderson.”We are adding new pilot locations this year based on user requests and consultations with local business associations.”
Both Old Strathcona and 124th Street are busy shopping, dining and entertainment districts and draw significant vehicle, cyclist and pedestrian traffic. The on-street bike parking program is designed to create a more bike-friendly atmosphere and improve the walkability in these locations.
“Bike corrals accommodate up to 16 bikes in the same space as one vehicle,” said Henderson. “The goal is to create a more pedestrian friendly environment in these areas by providing alternate parking facilities.”
2013 bike corral locations include:
- 102 Street just south of Whyte Avenue near Roots on Whyte
- Whyte Avenue and 104 Street near Starbucks
- 105 Street just north of Whyte Avenue near Chapters
- 104 Street just south of 83 Avenue near The Next Act
A fifth location on 124th Street is expected to be installed by the end of the month.
