CALGARY – Work on Calgary’s new emergency operations centre is on hold as a result of a road cave-in in Crescent Heights over the weekend.

Dump trucks were busy hauling loads of gravel into the excavation site after the shoring wall started slumping.

A section of 1st Street northeast by 6th Avenue has been shut down. A City official says nearby residents are not facing any danger. However, Don Horton, a building owner in the area says the pavement on his property has cracked, and the building has settled a couple of centimeters.

“The whole road is sliding along with my building; sliding into this hole. I came by Saturday and they said we’re just dealing with it and this happened Thursday and no one was informed.”

Engineers are still trying to determine that cause of the slumping shoring wall. The roadway will remain closed until structural issues are addressed and the surface is repaved and sidewalks repaired.
