Drug seizure sparks warning to Calgary parents

CALGARY – In a first of its kind drug seizure for Calgary Police, an estimated $30,000 worth of synthetic marijuana has been seized from seven stores throughout the city.

Following tips from Canada Border Services Agency, police searched three Bongs & Such stores, three Smoker’s Corner stores, a Grass Roots store and a warehouse on Tuesday and found a total of 770 packages of the synthetic drug, which is illegal in Canada.

Synthetic marijuana, which also goes by the names Spice, K2, Yucatan Fire, Tribe and Skunk, is a herbal and chemical product which mimics the effects of smoking marijuana.

Side effects can include panic attacks, heart palpitations, hallucination, delusions and vomiting.

While there have been approximately 50 seizures of the drug across Canada since 2008, this is the first known seizure in Alberta.

Synthetic marijuana also illegal in many European countries and several U.S. states.
