Envision Edmonton cancels community league offer

The group collecting signatures to try and force a plebescite on the city centre airport has retracted a controversial offer they made last week.

Last Thursday Envision Edmonton offered funds to community leagues that helped collect signatures for their petition. The more signatures a canvasser added to the petition, the more money their community league would receive.

The offer to give money to community leagues raised eyebrows throughout the city over the weekend, but as of Tuesday morning the group has retracted the offer.

"It has been very ill received in the media and our intention misinterpreted." Envision Edmonton said in a news release, adding "One club that showed interest yesterday changed their mind late in the afternoon. Others have shown initial interest but no one has picked up a package."

Envision Edmonton has eight more days to collect the signatures required to force a plebescite.
