Chinook Centre hopes to expand – again

Chinook Centre, which recently completed a major expansion, wants to expand again.

The mall’s owner, Cadillac Fairview, is meeting with the city’s planning commission Thursday with a new proposal that could see the addition of more office and retail space, a hotel and even residential development.

If the development plans are approved, some surface parking may go below ground.

Cadillac Fairview describes the plan as a transit-oriented, mixed-use development showcasing progressive design and sustainable practices.

“It certainly fits within our transit oriented development policy,” says councillor Druh Farrell. “Chinook Centre is pretty darn busy, so that will be an interesting question about transportation. But we have already done quite a bit of work around Chinook station and transit oriented development, and we are trying to encourage that type of mixed use.”

Chinook Centre is Calgary’s largest enclosed shopping mall and draws more than 13 million people a year.
