Naming the new south bridge

SASKATOON – Construction began in 2010 and the city’s largest financial project ever has since been unofficially named ‘The Circle Drive South Bridge’. Scheduled to officially open in less than 2 months time, local resident Jo Nanson is suggesting the mouthful term be ditched and replaced with ‘Yorath’.

“Yorath was a visionary during a time when Saskatoon was a very small community” said Nanson.

Christopher Yorath was Saskatoon’s first city commissioner. One hundred years after he envisioned the encompassing ring of ‘circle drive’ the loop is about to be complete. Nanson is making the ‘Yorath’  name suggestion to the city’s naming advisory committee this week.

“I’m certainly hoping this at least gets some serious consideration” she said.

“The idea of naming something after the visionary isn’t completely new. There’s a little island in the river just South of Saskatoon that’s already Yorath’s namesake and so is a small and rarely travelled street, Yorath Avenue, in the Haultain neighbourhood.”

Mayor Don Atchison says he’s just anxious to get the bridge open and hasn’t put much thought into a name.

“We have a Circle Drive North Bridge, I don’t see why we wouldn’t have a Circle Drive South Bridge to start with and perhaps we’ll have a contest, a fundraiser… who knows” said Atchison.

All roadway names in Saskatoon come from public suggestions. The naming advisory committee weeds through these ideas and passes them along to city council for approval.

The bridge and all connecting roads are scheduled to open at the end of July.
