Emergency crews were called to a plaza near Kipling and Steeles avenues at about 7:30 p.m.

Police said when officers arrived, the man, now identified as 21-year-old Amir Naraine, was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police said the man was pronounced dead on scene.

“We believe Amir was not the only occupant in the vehicle,” Det. Sgt. Andy Singh told reporters Monday afternoon.

Singh said police believe the car, with Naraine inside, was left in the area for a number of hours before it was called in.

Police said the call they received Sunday evening was for “somebody who was passed out in a vehicle” at the plaza near Kipling and Steeles avenues.

“I don’t believe that’s where the shooting occurred,” Singh said.

“Even the way it [the car] was left in the plaza parking lot. It was left in a haphazard manner. It wasn’t parked properly. I believe whoever left the vehicle behind did so in a rush,” he continued.

Singh also said Naraine’s family, who is from Brampton, had previously reported him missing earlier to Peel Regional Police.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen Naraine or the vehicle he was found in, a black 2018 Chevrolet Malibu with tinted windows, to call police.

“I do believe there are individuals out there that would have known exactly what time the vehicle was dropped and what time the vehicle was eventually found by us,” Singh said.
