Police interviewed other drivers and witnesses in the area, and determined that the driver of the vehicle who struck the man did not remain at the scene, he said.

The man was found on the road and died at the scene, Williamson added.

The immediate area was closed for several hours for the police investigation, but has since been reopened.

Investigators said they are searching for a dark-coloured 2004 or 2005 Toyota Sienna van that may have front-end damage.
