Toronto police say one woman is dead while another woman remains in serious condition after they were struck by a vehicle in North York on Wednesday.
Police said officers responded to a call in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area just after noon.
“It appears the women were crossing from the north side here towards the south side of the roadway,” said Sgt. Brett Moore of Traffic Services.
“This for all intents and purposes is an uncontrolled section of the roadway, but that’s definitely one of the pieces we’re hoping to get from witnesses just to piece it together.”
Police initially said one victim was in life-threatening condition, while the other was in serious, possibly life-threatening condition. Both women, who are in their 60s, were transported to a trauma centre, where the former succumbed to her injuries.
“It’s a very busy street. I believe nobody should ever try to cross this road. They should go up by the stop light. There’s two stop lights, one there and one up here,” said area resident Necruma Cuff.
“It’s dangerous,” he said.
The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 20s, stayed on scene and is cooperating with police. There is no word on charges at this time.
Finch Avenue is closed as police investigate.
