CALGARY – A 15-year-old has been charged with a string of offences after a stolen truck sped erratically through the city Tuesday morning, striking several vehicles, including police cruisers.

The male teen, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was charged with three counts of assault with a weapon.

He was also slapped with one count each of possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, hit and run, and several Alberta Traffic Safety Act offences.

Police are still trying to map out the route the truck took during the hour and a half joyride.

Soon after, police were receiving multiple calls about the vehicle, which was later determined to be stolen.

At times, the truck’s speed exceeded 100 km/h, and was seen on the wrong side of the road, on sidewalks and road shoulders. Police say the truck may have struck other vehicles while “zigzagging” through the city.

Officers tracked the Ford to a back alley in the 1500 block of 26th Avenue S.W. in Bankview. The truck rammed a police vehicle and struck another in an attempt to flee, police said.

At about 10 a.m., the truck was stopped and the driver was arrested. He was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital for precautionary reasons.

A police officer was also assessed by EMS at the scene but did not need to be taken to hospital.

Anyone whose vehicle was struck is asked to report the incident in person at a Calgary Police district office or at Westwinds Campus Headquarters Building at 5111 47th St. N.E.
