Wintry weather closes roads, cancels school buses in Waterloo region, schools remain open

Wintry weather caused school buses to be cancelled and major roadways to be closed in Waterloo region on Monday morning.

Arthur Street South between Listowel Road and Sawmill Road in Woolwich was closed for several hours due to near whiteout conditions.

Listowel Road was re-opened around noon after having been closed for several hours as was the low level bridge in St Jacobs.

A Waterloo Regional Police officer released a video of the driving conditions in the townships on Monday morning.

The closure of Arthur Street South forced Grand River Transit to turn back the Route 21 bus at Sawmill Road.

The city of Woolwich was also forced to keep plows off of the roadways due to disastrous driving conditions.

At the south end of the region, garbage collection in North Dumfries was cancelled.

School buses in Waterloo region were cancelled Monday however schools were open, Student Transportation Services of Waterloo Region announced. Extended daycare programs were also left open.

A storm system which developed Sunday which brought snow and high winds to the region was blamed for the all of the changes.

The Waterloo Region District School Board says that transportation for transportation for WCSSAA sports games has also been cancelled.

“As always, parents may choose to keep their children home if they feel it is unsafe to travel to school,” the board said in its announcement.

The City of Waterloo has a list of programs and facilities which are affected by Monday’s weather.

The Township office in Wellesley has been closed.
