Belleville police charge 49-year-old man with first-degree murder

A Belleville man is facing charges after a 23-year-old man was found dead inside a home on Wednesday afternoon. Emergency services were called to the house after what police say was a serious altercation – Feb 21, 2019

Belleville Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man Wednesday afternoon inside a home in the city.

Emergency crews were initially called to a home in downtown Belleville to respond to reports of a serious altercation.

Police say when they arrived at the home on Murney Street, they found an adult male inside with no vital signs.

According to police the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Police say with the help of witnesses, they were able to locate the suspect nearby. Police say he was arrested without incident.

As of Thursday, Belleville police have charged Fredrick Gordon Howes, 49, of Belleville with one count of first-degree murder and one count of breaching his recognizance.

The investigation has been taken over by detectives with Belleville police’s criminal investigations branch and forensic teams have been pouring over the site.

Belleville police are currently in the midst of notifying next of kin of the deceased and will not release information about them at this time.
