A fire in Otonabee South Monaghan Township east of Peterborough on Tuesday night has left two people homeless.
They were not injured but their 30-year-old home on Keene Road near the village of Keene was destroyed.
A smoke alarm alerted the owners around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Bidgoods, a couple in their 60s, had escaped unharmed and were waiting outside when firefighters arrived.
Strong winds and freezing temperatures made controlling the blaze difficult, according to township fire chief Ted Bryant.
He called it a “major, major fire in the community.”
By 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the home was being demolished.
Chief Bryant said the cause was not known but he said it wasn’t suspicious, and pegged damages at $2 million.
A next-door neighbor told CHEX News the Bidgoods had recently put a new roof on their three-storey home, along with other improvements.
She also said the farmhouse on the other side of her place was destroyed by fire last July.
A section of Old Keene Road, between Redmon Road and Baseline Road, was closed most of the day while fire crews mopped up.
