In Longueuil, a string of cars double parked in front of a non-profit organization as people dropped off bags full of donations at Carrefour Mousseau on Monday.
Alain Dumaresq, president of Carrefour Mousseau, says people have been dropping off donations since Sunday after kitchen fire completely destroyed a Longueuil apartment complex. The blaze killed three people and left dozens homeless.
“It’s crazy. We had about 20 bags all over the place,” Dumaresq said. “This morning there was almost the same or more — and people keep coming.”

Marie-Pierre Gorry dropped by with donations for those who lost everything in the fire. She said it’s important to help others in the community.
“If it would have happened to me I would like for someone to donate something, especially this time of year,” Gorry said.

Smaller items are piling up at Carrefour Mousseau and organizers are running out of space to house all of the donations. Larger items are being donated at the Trait D’Union community centre.
The generosity could also be felt at Longueuil city hall, where flags flew at half mast Monday in honour of the three residents who died in the blaze. The city says hundreds of calls were made concerning donations for the victims of the fire.

“There has been really an outpouring of generosity,” said city spokesperson Louis-Pascal Cyr.
“It’s a testimony to how close knit Longueuil is as a community.”
All week donations will be accepted. Donors are encouraged to contact the city by calling 311.
Families displaced by the fire are currently being housed by the Red Cross.
