Hamilton City Council’s recent decision to go behind closed doors to discuss a Grey Cup bid will be investigated.
Ontario’s Ombudsman confirms in a letter to the city that it has received a complaint, and that it will be investigating to determine whether the in-camera meeting was a violation of the Ontario Municipal Act.
Councillors voted during the Jan. 16 meeting to support the Hamilton Tiger-Cats bid to host the Grey Cup in either 2020 or 2021, although they haven’t released details including the potential cost to taxpayers.
The decision to keep that information behind closed doors is said to have been made to avoid putting Hamilton at a competitive disadvantage with other cities bidding to host the Canadian Football League’s championship game.
The letter from the Ombudsman is part of Wednesday’s city council agenda.
