City of Kawartha Lakes OPP issued a number of charges to drivers involving cannabis over the weekend.
Among the incidents included are:
Friday, Feb. 1
Around 1:25 p.m., OPP stopped a vehicle on Angeline Street South in Lindsay following a driving complaint from a citizen. The driver — Kelly Jefferies, 47 years of age of Georgina, Ont., — was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs. She will appear in court in Lindsay on March 14.
Saturday, Feb. 2
- Around 9:15 p.m., an officer was conducting a traffic investigation in Fenelon Falls where 10 grams of open cannabis was seized from a vehicle. As a result of the investigation, a man from Brechin was charged with care or control of a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available. No name was released.
- Around 12:45 a.m., officers conducting a RIDE spot check on Highway 7 near Highway 35 noted a strong odour of cannabis coming from a vehicle. As a result of an investigation, a man from Edmonton was charged with driving a vehicle with cannabis readily available. The officer seized 28 grams of cannabis. No name was released.
Sunday, Feb. 3
- Around 2:20 p.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle collision on Sturgeon Road just south of the community of Downeyville. Following an investigation, Courtney Paats, 31, of Whitby was arrested and charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs; operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration 80 plus and driving a motor vehicle with an unsealed container of liquor. The accused is scheduled to appear in court in Lindsay on March 21.
- Around 10:15 p.m., officers conducting a RIDE check on Highway 7 at Kawartha Lakes Road 36 noted a strong odour of cannabis coming from a vehicle. As a result of an investigation, a man from Lindsay was charged with possession for the purpose of distributing. The officer seized in excess of 30 grams of cannabis. No name was released.
OPP are reminding drivers that if transporting cannabis, unless otherwise exempt, the cannabis must be in its original package that has not been opened, or packaged in baggage that is fastened closed or is not otherwise readily available to any person in the vehicle.
