According to Environment Canada’s forecast for the next few days, Londoners can take a little break from bundling up against the cold.

About a centimetre of snow that fell Wednesday evening has melted away in mild temperatures, which forecasters say are expected to last for at least the next week.

Thursday’s high is 1 C, while Friday will be mainly sunny with a high of 6 C.

The sunshine will stay for the weekend, as temperatures taper off gradually: Saturday’s high is 4 C and Sunday’s high is 1 C.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Weiqinq Zhang tells 980 CFPL there are no significant systems making their way to London until Monday and Tuesday.

“There’s still some uncertainty” about what that system may bring early next week, Zhang explained, but she anticipates snow Monday evening will turn into a mixture of snow and rain, and then rain.

The snow and rain combination is expected to continue throughout Tuesday. The high for both Monday and Tuesday is 2 C.

The average high for this time of year hovers around -2 C degrees, while the average low is -9 C.

Unseasonably warm temperatures aren’t cause for concern over at Boler Mountain, however, where officials say they have “topped up” the snow on eight runs that have been open since Dec 12.

Greg Stauss, part of Boler Mountain’s management team, told 980 CFPL they’ll keep those eight runs open. They’re offering discounted lift tickets for $30.

“It’s some great temperatures for skiing, but definitely not some great temperatures for making more snow and opening more additional runs,” he explained.

Boler Mountain needs temperatures to drop to -2 C or lower in order to make its own snow, explained Stauss. They’re hoping to open their Tube Park in the next few days, but will need colder temperatures and more snow to open up all skiing and snowboarding runs.

And according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng, “the jury is still out” on the kind of winter London will be having.

“We’ve been hesistant to say it’s going to be above seasonal,” he explained.

“Having said that, this winter should be normal or near normal… I’m not so sure, as we get to the latter half of winter, that it’s going to stay mild.”
