CALGARY- Canada has cracked the top 10 list, when it comes to the top tourist destinations in the world.
The World Economic Forum has released its 2013 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, which ranks 140 countries on their attractiveness and ability to develop their tourism industries. Researchers look at each country’s potential to boost their economy and environmental sustainability.
Switzerland came first overall, thanks to its strong infrastructure, top marks for hotels with excellent staff, safety, and well-managed natural resources. Germany ranked second thanks to its cultural resources, hotel prices and environmental record. Austria rounded out the top three, for its welcoming attitude towards visitors, safe environment and rich cultural resources—boasting nine World Heritage culture sites within its borders.
Canada grabbed eighth place due to its rich natural resources, World Heritage sites and excellent air transport options. However, the report found the country is struggling with price competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
