The Calgary Zoo’s Panda Passage has been open for just over a year and is home to Er Shun, Da Mao and Canadian-born cubs Jia Panpan and Jia Yueyue.
The giant pandas are on loan from China as part of a partnership between the Chinese and Canadian governments. The pandas arrived in Calgary in May after a five-year stay in Toronto.
The adults will be at the Calgary Zoo for five years, while the cubs will head back to China as part of a 10-year breeding program.

In March 2019, the zoo announced mother panda Er Shun had entered the early stages of her breeding cycle, updating panda watchers in April that the bear had been artificially inseminated.
The habitat is part of a global conservation effort to help the vulnerable species. The facility was awarded for its eco-friendliness in April 2019 with the Petal Certification as part of the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge.
