Two familiar faces are seeking the mayor’s seat in the Municipality of Trent Lakes.
Former mayor and councillor Janet Clarkson is aiming to return to the council table. And she’ll be vying for the top spot against current Harvey Ward councillor Peter Raymond. The position came open after veteran councillor and incumbent Mayor Bev Matthews announced she would not be seeking re-election.
Matthews ousted Clarkson in the 2014 election 2,237 votes to 1,932. Prior to that Clarkson served eight years on council: four as councillor-at-large and four as mayor. Raymond was acclaimed as councillor that same election.

The Municipality
The Municipality of Trent Lakes is located in the northwest corner of Peterborough County, bordering Selwyn Township, Haliburton County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. Its largest community is Buckhorn, about 30 kilometres north of Peterborough. A large portion of the municipality is Crown land but as its name suggests, the area has an abundance of lakes and the Trent Severn Waterway. Both aspects have helped to create a strong tourism and cottage-based economy. The region also features 36 active quarries extracting granite and limestone. The municipality was renamed Trent Lakes in 2013 (formerly known as Harvey-Galway-Cavendish).
