Missing man’s body recovered from car that drove off Cape Breton ferry

ST. ANNS, N.S. – Police confirm they’ve found the body of Jerry Hengeveld, 81, in the car that drove off the Englishtown Ferry last Monday.

Hengeveld of Waterville, NS, was reported missing around 2:30 pm on Friday, last seen at a gas station in Baddeck on March 25 at 5 pm, about three hours before a car drove on to the ferry and failed to stop.

The medical examiner will check for any underlying factors. The vehicle will also be inspected for mechanical issues.

Police began investigating the possibility that Hengeveld may have been the person behind the wheel on Saturday.

RCMP found the car Tuesday morning in St. Anns Bay using a side-scan sonar device around 11:15 a.m.

Divers hooked the car up to a fishing vessel and tow boat dragging it to shore Tuesday afternoon.

Police do not suspect foul play.

The cause of the incident continues to be investigated.
