A man has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly rammed his truck into the front porch of a Port Alberni home, sending three people to hospital with broken legs.

According to RCMP Const. Brad Essex, the incident happened as a result of an earlier fist fight between four men early Saturday morning.

A 19-year-old man and his friend were walking past a home in the 2800-block Sixth Avenue when his friend became involved in a fight with two men on the front lawn of a residence.

The 19-year-old left the scene for help and soon returned with a Chevy pickup truck, just before 1 a.m.

It’s believed the man purposely plowed his vehicle into the front porch of the home, hitting the two men who had been drinking outside, and another woman who was inside the residence.

“Later on, we were able to determine the 19-year-old driver . . . intentionally rammed the vehicle into the porch,” Essex said, noting it appeared to be an act of vengeance related to the earlier fight.

When police arrived, Essex said one man was pinned under the truck, while the driver and his friend had fled the scene.

Canine officers were able to track down and arrest the two men a short distance away.

The men who were hit were taken to Nanaimo General Hospital, while the woman was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital in serious but stable condition.

“Every person who was hit received broken legs at a minimum,” Essex said, noting the woman had two broken legs, a broken hip, a broken pelvis and a punctured lung.

She has since undergone surgery and will likely remain in hospital for at least a month.

The 19-year-old driver has been released on bail but faces two charges of attempted murder and one charge of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

He is expected back in court on May 2.
