Chinese student dies after snowboarding out of bounds at Whistler

A Chinese student is dead after snowboarding out of bounds at Whistler.

RCMP say the 23-year-old female was reported missing Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

She was snowboarding at by herself at the time she went missing. When she failed to meet her friends at a rally point, the ski patrol was called and authorities alerted.

Search and Rescue were mobilized but according to RCMP, they were not able to start searching until 7 a.m. this morning. It’s not clear why there was a delay.

Her body was found near Fitzsimmons Creek on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., between the sliding centre and the power plant.

RCMP say it appears she traveled out of bounds and attempted to hike out, but it’s not clear if she realized she was in the backcountry.
