Male babysitter accused of sexually assaulting baby girl in his care

CLARINGTON, Ont. – Police say a man sought in an alleged sexual assault on a baby girl in Clarington, east of Toronto, tried to harm himself when approached by officers and required immediate medical attention.

Police say their investigation began Monday when the infant’s parents found her injured after an evening with a babysitter.

They say officers tracked down the babysitter the following day while he was walking (on Thickson Road North) in nearby Whitby.

Investigators say that at the sight of the officers, the 27-year-old suspect pulled out a knife and slashed himself several times.

They say he was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital, then later charged with aggravated sexual assault.

The child is recovering in hospital.
