A Kitchener grandmother bought a lottery ticket on a whim to celebrate her retirement and ended up $1 million richer.
Carol Knipfel bought a ticket for the June 1 Lotto Max draw on the day she retired as a utilities department dispatcher.

“I don’t play the lottery often,” Knipfel said in a statement released by OLGC. “I usually only buy a ticket when the Lotto Max jackpot approaches $60 million.”
The grandmother of six didn’t check her ticket for a week and then was shocked to find out what she had won, while going through the checkout line at the grocery store. She said she was left speechless when she found out she had won.
“I didn’t actually believe it until I saw the validation slip printed out. I was speechless, I didn’t know what to say,” Knipfel said.

She plans to buy a new car and pay off her mortgage with her $1-million Maxmillions prize.
Her winning ticket was purchased at C & J Variety on Belmont Avenue in Kitchener.
