Some garlic bulbs have been returned to Waverley Memorial Elementary School after the school’s garden was targeted by a theft sometime Monday morning.
The school planted garlic in October with the plan to harvest and sell some of it over the summer. Throughout the year, the Grade 3 class tended to the garden with parents, teachers and garden club members all volunteering to take care of it through the summer months.
But on Monday morning it was discovered all the garlic had been ripped out of the garden and stolen.

A plea for its return was partially successful. Half of the garlic was returned early Wednesday morning, along with $9 and a not that read: “So sorry we thought it was free to take.”
Half of the garlic is still missing, and Sara Wood said the returned garlic is just enough for replanting so there will be no sale of their plants this summer.
She said students will replant the garlic in the fall with hope that next year’s batch can be harvested for sell.
