The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is getting ready to kick-start its season into the perfect rhythm as Ballet in the Park gets going this week.
This year’s performance from July 25 to 27 at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park will showcase a lot of the work the ballet company and classes are doing, said the RWB’s Katie Bonnell.
“You really get to see all of the stages of this organization,” she said.
“The big thing this year is that we’re doing a few excerpts from an upcoming ballet, ‘Wizard of Oz.’ You get to see the professional training division of the school doing excerpts from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the recreational division of the school are doing a few hip-hop pieces.”
The outdoor theatre will give the audience a unique behind-the-scenes look at ballet, she added.
“You actually get to see the dancers warm-up on stages because it’s completely open. There’s no curtain that comes down.
“The company usually does a shortened class at around 6:30 p.m. If you’re ever interested in how we train and warm-up for shows, you get to see all of that, which is really cool.”
The performance is weather-dependent. Regular updates will be provided on the ballet company’s social media feeds and website.
“We”ve put a show on hold for 20 minutes before for rain to pass and afterwards we just kept going. You never know what to expect,” said Bonnell.
