Sask. teen facing charges after items destroyed by RCMP explosive disposal unit

Swift Current RCMP say a 17-year-old boy is facing a charge of possession of an explosive without lawful excuse after suspicious items were destroyed.

A complaint about an item resembling a pipe bomb in the 400-block of Herbert Street East in Swift Current, Sask., was received at around 1 a.m. CT on June 14.

Officers secured the scene and located three suspicious items in the middle of a parking lot, well away from any structures.

As a precaution, the RCMP’s explosive disposal unit destroyed the items at the scene.

An investigation was launched into the origin and nature of the suspicious items. As a result, the teen is also facing a charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

The accused, from Swift Current, cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He is in custody and scheduled to appear in Swift Current provincial court on July 20.

Swift Current is approximately 235 kilometres west of Regina.
