Police said on Wednesday they made an arrest on June 22 after receiving a report that a girl was sexually assaulted between 2014 and 2018.

The accused is “known to have been around children for many years” as a daycare was operated the family home, which is located in the area of Bayview Avenue and Palmer Avenue, police said.

Police declined to elaborate further on the man’s association with the daycare, saying that they were limited in what information could be released in the case in order to protect the identity of the victim and anyone else connected to the daycare.

“There was no concerns in terms of anyone else associated [with the daycare],” York Regional Police Sgt. Laura Nicolle said.  “However, this person was residing at the same residence and obviously had access to some children at that time.”

Police released the man’s photo on Wednesday and are looking to speak with anyone who may have information on the case.

“We want to ensure that we encourage anyone who has information on this — anyone who may have been a victim, or anyone who was a witness — we’re encouraging them to come forward,” Nicolle said.

Karim Saad, 23, has been charged with five counts of sexual assault and five counts of sexual interference involving a person under 16.

He is expected to appear in court in Newmarket on July 26.
