On Tuesday, Douro-Dummer, Selwyn, Asphodel-Norwood and Otonabee-South Monaghan townships put burn bans in effect immediately given the continued dry conditions.

“We hope that conditions change and we can all enjoy the recreational fires that memories are made from, but until that time please be responsible with all ignition sources, including cigarettes that have already caused fires along the side of roadways,” stated Douro-Dummer fire chief Chuck Pedersen.

Pedersen said another factor for the ban is some water sources are no longer available, which could lead to shuttling water from further distances and delaying extinguishing blazes.

In Douro-Dummer, no open air burning will be permitted with the exception of campgrounds. Anyone caught setting a fire during the ban could be fined $500 and ordered to pay for the response to extinguish the fire and be charged $465.42 per fire apparatus.
