Elmira man in custody after attacking officer with axe: police

A man was arrested early Sunday morning at 1 a.m. in Elmira, Ont., after police say he attacked an officer with an axe.

Police said an officer on patrol recognized the man’s description from a previous incident and pulled over around the intersection of Herbert Street and Church Street South.

Waterloo police said the 20-year-old Elmira resident then approached the patrol vehicle and slammed an axe through the driver’s-side window of the SUV before it hitting an officer in the hand.

The axe fell to the floor of the vehicle before the man fled on foot.

He was found a short time later with the help of the strategic response unit.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries that did not require hospital care, police said.

The Elmira man is facing several charges including assaulting a police officer with a weapon.
