Road trip Ontario: Let’s all go to the drive-in

Many believe drive-in movie theatres are a thing of the past, but in Ontario there is an abundance of them still operating and showing the latest blockbusters to carloads of people every summer.

There are at least 17 drive-in movie theatres still standing from the London area to the Ottawa area. If you are planning on hitting the road this summer, stopping at one to catch a couple of flicks is a great way to get the nostalgia flowing and makes for an excellent family night out.

We have broken down all the Ontario drive-ins still operating and what they have to offer.

London area

Mustang Drive-in (London)

London’s Mustang Drive-in is open seven days a week during the summer and offers two screens with two movies playing on each (one for action/drama and one for comedy/family films). General admission is $12 per adult and $3 for children between the ages of five and 12 (children four and under are free). They offer $8 adult tickets on Tuesdays and $20 for a carload on Thursdays. Box office opens at 8:30 p.m. and they accept cash, credit and debit.

Food options available include snacks like popcorn, pretzels and deep-fried pickles, as well as burgers, hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken fingers and much more.

Hanover Drive-in Theatre

The Hanover Drive-in Theatre is located northeast of Goderich just off Highway 6N. Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, it offers one screen with two movies (three movies on holidays). General admission is $12 ($8 on Tuesdays). Children under 12 are $3. They only accept cash.

They offer snacks and food like popcorn, hot dogs, nachos and deep-fried pickles.

Starlite Drive-in Grand Bend

The Starlite Drive-in Grand Bend has two screens playing two movies seven nights a week over the summer. General admission is $10 for adults, $6 for teens (13-17) and seniors (65+), and $4 for children 6-13 (children under 6 are free). They offer $20 carload Sundays. They only accept cash and do play classic movies on occasion.

Hamilton/Niagara area

Canview Drive-in

Located in Fonthill, Ont., the Canview Drive-in is open seven days a week and has four screens with two movies playing on each every night. General admission is $12 for adults (14-64), $7 for seniors (65+) and $3 for children 7-13 (children six and under are free). They offer $7 general admission tickets on Tuesdays and $17 carload Thursdays. Box office opens at 8 p.m. and they accept cash only (there is an ATM on site).

Food options include popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, burgers and fries, as well as deep-fried pickles, poutine and frozen treats.

Starlite Drive-in

The Starlite Drive-in in Stoney Creek is open seven days a week during the summer and has three screens with two movies on each every night. General admission is $12 per adult and $3 for children between the ages of five and 12 (children four and under are free). They offer $7.50 adult tickets on Tuesdays and $20 for a carload on Thursdays. Box office opens at 7 p.m. and they accept cash, credit and debit.

Food options available include regular snacks like popcorn and pretzels, as well as deep-fried pickles, burgers, hot dogs and more.

Oakville’s 5 Drive-in is open seven days a week over the summer and has three themed screens (action, comedy and drama) playing two movies on each every night. General admission is $13 per adult and $3 for children between the ages of five and 12 (children four and under are free). They offer $8 adult tickets on Tuesdays and $20 carload Thursdays. Box office opens at 7:45 p.m. and they accept cash, credit and debit.

Lots of snack and hot food options are available to purchase, including popcorn and pretzels and hot dogs and hamburgers.

Guelph

Guelph’s Mustang Drive-in is open seven days a week over the summer and offers one screen with two movies each night. General admission is $13 for adults and $5 for children five to 12 (children under four are free). They offer $10 tickets on Tuesdays and $20 a carload on Thursdays. Gates open at 8:30 p.m. with the first movie starting at 9:35 p.m. They accept cash only.

Barrie and north

Located just off Highway 11 north of Barrie, Sunset Barrie has three screens playing two movies per night, seven days a week, throughout the summer. General admission is $12 per adult and $3 for children between the ages of five and 12 (children four and under are free). They offer $7.50 adult tickets on Tuesdays and $20 for a carload on Thursdays. Box office opens at 7 p.m. and they accept cash, credit and debit.

Lots of snack and hot food options are available to purchase, including popcorn and pretzels and hot dogs and hamburgers.

Stardust Drive-in

Just north of Newmarket, and with three screens playing two movies each night seven days a week during the summer, the Stardust Drive-in is a frequent destination for moviegoers in the Toronto area. General admission is $13 per adult and $3 for children between the ages of five and 12 (children four and under are free). They offer $8 adult tickets on Tuesdays and $20 carload Thursdays. Box office opens at 7:00 p.m. and they accept cash, credit and debit.

Food options include favourites like popcorn, deep-fried pickles, hamburgers, hot dogs and more.

Muskoka Drive-in

The Muskoka Drive-in is open seven days a week and has two screens playing two movies each night. General admission for adults is $12 on Saturday and Sunday and $10 during the week. Children six to 12 are $4 (children under five are free). They do offer $15 a carload on certain nights. Box office opens 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 8:15 p.m. Monday to Friday. They accept cash only and have an ATM on site.

They offer popcorn daily, with 50 cent refills. Burgers, sausages and hot dogs are available on Saturday and Sunday up until showtime.

Midland Drive-in

The Midland Drive-in is open Thursday to Sunday and has one screen playing two movies a night. General admission is $9 for adults (13 and up). Children 12 and under free. They offer $10 a carload on Thursdays. Box office opens at 8 p.m. and they accept cash only.

Popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and hamburgers are all on the snack bar menu along with deep-fried Mars bars.

Peterborough area

Lindsay Drive-in

The Lindsay Drive-in is open seven days a week and offers two screens playing two movies on each every night. General admission is $11 for adults and $4 for children 6-12 (children 5 and under are free). They offer $15 a carload on Tuesdays. Box office opens at 7:30 p.m. and they accept cash only (there is an ATM on site).

Snack bar items include popcorn, french fries, slushies and more.

Port Hope Drive-in

Located in Cobourg, the Port Hope Drive-in is open seven days a week over the summer with one screen playing two movies each night. General admission is $12.50 for adults, $10 for teens 13-17 and $5 for children 5-12 (children 4 and under are free). They offer $15 a carload on Sundays. They only accept cash at the box office (the snack bar accepts debit).

Food on offer includes hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, and their specialty – Prings (onion rings made like poutine).

Picton

Mustang Drive-in Picton

Picton’s Mustang Drive-in is open Thursday to Sunday with one screen playing two movies a night. General admission is $11 for adults and $5 for children 5-12 (children under 5 are free). They offer carload Thursdays for $20. Please note that they do not have a website and our messages to their Facebook page and our phone calls went unanswered. Therefore we were unable to confirm their prices, operating hours, if they accept credit or debit and what they have on offer at their snack bar.

Kingston

Kingston Family Fun World Park

Kingston Family Fun World Park is open seven days a week and has three screens playing two movies a night. General admission is $12, $7 for seniors (65+) and $6 for children five to 12 (kids under four are free). They offer carload Tuesdays for $25 and accept cash, debit and credit.

Typical food and snacks are available for purchase at the concession stand.

Ottawa area

Skylight Drive-in

The Skylight Drive-in in Pembroke has one screen with two movies playing each night and is open seven nights a week. General admission is $14 for adults and $7 for children three to 15. They offer $20 carloads on Thursdays and free admission to drivers of vehicles older than 1980 (vehicles older than 1954 the entire carload is free). They only accept cash or credit (no debit).

Hamburgers, corn dogs, nachos, fries, onion rings and candy is all on the concession stand menu.

Port Elmsley Drive-in

Located halfway between Perth and Smiths Falls, the Port Elmsley Drive-in has one screen playing two movies seven nights a week. General admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children five to 12 (children four and under are free). They offer special carload Thursday pricing of $24. Box office opens at 7:30 p.m. and accepts credit, debit and cash.

The fryer and grill in their snack bar is currently not working, but popcorn, candy and ice cream are all available.

A few things to note about all the above drive-in theatres in Ontario. None of them allow outside food or drinks, as this is how they make a profit to stay open. Most of them also have special long weekend “all-nighters” where they play three or four movies instead of two. You can expect to pay about $1 extra for general admission on these nights.
