According to Staff Sgt. Rene Aubertin with the Belleville Police, two officers and one civilian were taken to hospital in Belleville on Wednesday due to a suspicion they encountered a noxious substance.
Belleville police were called to an incident at the Comfort Inn on Park Street near 12:10 p.m. to deal with a person in distress, says Aubertin.
Police say when they arrived, they spoke with a 25-year-old male from St. Thomas, Ont. While trying to assist the man, officers believed they encountered a noxious substance.
Both officers and the male were taken to hospital as a precaution to be assessed.
The two officers are expected to be treated and released. The male is still being assessed. No charges are expected at this time.
Although there were some initial reports of officers being exposed to a “white powder,” Aubertin expressively denies that any white powder was mentioned by anyone from Belleville Police.
As for what the substance was? Belleville police are still unsure.
Aubertin says he has heard that everyone sent to hospital is currently in stable condition.
