A national preservation group said it was dismayed to learn the federal government has granted approval to demolish a heritage railway station in Saskatchewan.
The National Trust for Canada said the Canadian National Railway (CN) station in Biggar, Sask., was designated by the federal government as a national historic site in 1976 and a heritage railway station in 1995.
However, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna had recommended a federal Order in Council authorizing the demolition of the building, which CN applied for in 2014 to tear down as the building had become structurally unsafe.
National Trust executive director Natalie Bull said the imminent loss of the nationally significant structure underscores the urgent need for federal leadership and funding for Canada’s historic places.
