Dust advisory issued in Vernon

Officials have issued a dust advisory for Vernon.

High concentrations of coarse particulates are expected to be in the air until there is a change in the weather, according to the environment ministry.

The dusty conditions are mostly caused by road traffic stirring up winter traction materials that have accumulated on the road, according to a news release sent Monday.

The latest measurements at the Vernon Science Centre Station show an hourly average of 90 micrograms per cubic metre, nearly twice the provincial air quality objective of 50 micrograms per cubic metre.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, the average for the last 24 hours was 75 micrograms per cubic metre.

People with underlying medical conditions should avoid strenuous exercise until the advisory is lifted. Officials also recommend staying inside and reducing indoor sources of pollution, such as smoking, vacuuming and the use of wood stoves.

Avoiding roads with heavy traffic and running an indoor air cleaner, such as a HEPA filter, can also help reduce your personal health risk.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have diabetes, lung or heart disease, according to the release.
