TORONTO – Shaw Media won several awards Wednesday night as the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards recognized the best in TV news, sports and lifestyle programming.
The company, which owns Global News, dominated the lifestyle categories with three wins.
The Food Network’s From Spain with Love won Best Photography in a Lifestyle or Reality/Competition Program or Series (Jason Tan) and Best Direction (Dale Burshtein and Henry Less) while HGTV’s Income Property won Best Lifestyle Program or Series.
Best Local Newscast honours went to Global Toronto.
Jonathan Wong won Best Picture Editing in an Information Program or Series for his work on Global’s 16 x 9 The Bigger Picture.
History’s D-Day to Victory won Best History or Biography Documentary Program or Series.
The animated series Producing Parker, which airs on TVtropolis, won two awards.
The night’s big winner, though, was CBC, which won Best National Newscast and Best News Information Series (The Fifth Estate) as well as Best Breaking News Coverage (CBC News Now‘s reporting on Jack Layton’s death) and Best Breaking Reportage, National (Adrienne Arsenault’s reporting on Attawapiskat).
Long-running series The Nature of Things earned an award for Best Documentary Program or Series and host David Suzuki won Best Host of Interviewer in a News Information Program or Series.
Bell Media received several awards for its coverage of the London 2012 Olympics Games, including Best Live Sporting Event.
Veteran Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker received a standing ovation when she went on stage to accept the Academy Achievement Award in recognition of her 45-year career on television.
“I’m just totally overwhelmed,” Beker said. “This is emblematic of how far I’ve come but, most daunting, it’s a harbinger of how far I have yet to go.”
Wednesday’s industry gala was hosted by Steve Patterson. Awards in the drama, children’s or youth and comedy and variety categories will be handed out Thursday in a show hosted by Seamus O’Reagan.
The celebration of Canadian TV and film culminates Sunday night with a live show, hosted by Martin Short, broadcast from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.
