Nanaimo woman breaks into 2 bait cars in 16 minutes, seeking items on a ‘shopping list’

A Nanaimo woman may want to think about changing her lifestyle after she was arrested for breaking into two bait cars within 16 minutes on Wednesday, the RCMP said in a news release.

Police were alerted to a theft from a bait car parked in central Nanaimo on Wednesday at 5:40 a.m.

The car contained a recording system that allowed officers to review a video and form a description of the suspect, and identify what was taken.

Police were alerted to a second bait car activation only 16 minutes later.

After reviewing that car’s video, they determined it was the same suspect.

Officers found and arrested the suspect within three minutes, the RCMP said. She had items from the first bait car, as well as government ID and mail from people’s homes.

One of the items found in her possession was a “shopping list” that was “basically a wish list of items her friends want stolen from vehicles.”

The list included items such as makeup, underwear, speakers, compression socks and size 10 Nike hightops, police said.

Investigators say they often find similar lists when they arrest car thieves.

In this case, police arrested 33-year-old Nanaimo resident Kimberly Taylor for possession of stolen property, and held her in custody.

She was released, with a court date set for Dec. 5.
