Chilliwack RCMP warn merchants to watch their cash after receiving a rash of reports about counterfeit money.
“In each instance the customer receives change in Canadian currency after paying for a small transaction with a counterfeit United States (U.S.) $20 bill,” said Const. Dave Wheatley of the Chilliwack RCMP in a release.
Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for the fake money and have released an image captured from security camera footage of a man they believe is responsible for some of the counterfeit cash.
“Although the transactions have been made along the Yale Road – Vedder Road corridor, police remind all merchants to remain wary when receiving payment in U.S. $20 denominations,” said Cpl. Mike Rail, spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment.
Police say to prevent fraud speak up. If money is suspected to be counterfeit say something and refuse to take it, and inform the police about a possible attempt to pass counterfeit money.
