Manitoba truck driver escapes icy river after crashing over side of bridge

A St. Claude Manitoba driver managed to pull himself to safety after the truck he was driving lost control, crashing through the side of a bridge and into the ice-covered river below.

In a news release Friday RCMP said the 73-year-old was driving southbound on Road 18W, three kilometers north of Highway 3, around 8:40 a.m.

Police said the truck and the trailer it was towing lost control and went through the railings and through the ice on the Norquay Channel below.

The man was able to pull himself out of his truck and get to shore.

The driver of a passing car stopped and helped keep him warm until an ambulance and Morden and Carman RCMP arrived.

He was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
