“This year we just had a fluky situation happen,” media relations lead Trish Exton-Parder said.

“One particular peacock, for whatever reason, chose to go on a random flight … and unfortunately, that did not end well.”

Exton-Parder said there was little the zoo’s animal care team could do once the animal took off. She said there were no protocols that weren’t followed and that the process for rounding up the animals each year is “standard and straightforward.”

Exton-Parder said the animal care team will conduct a review but she doesn’t expect any restrictions on the movement of the birds in the spring.

We’ll still have them out and about and I think we can just tuck this away as a sad situation that will hopefully never happen again.”
